HOUSTON – The Houston Peace Council participated in the Martin Luther King, Jr. day parade in Houston today. The weather today was beautiful in Houston and the turnout was excellent to honor this great champion of civil rights and economic justice for all peoples. The crowd was diverse and mirrored the population of Houston. Participants and spectators were all exuberant and spirited in their support for social and economic justice. Participants included men and women who were African American, Asian, Latino, Anglo and Arab Americans.
Many organizations were present to include: Radio station KPFT, CWA, HOPE, UAW, AFGE, Harris County Green Party, Houston Peace & Justice Center, Houston Peace Council, the Texas Death Penalty Abolition Movement, AFSCME, Harris County AFL-CIO, SEIU, Good Jobs: Great Houston, Occupy Houston and the Houston Communist Party.
Also present were many high school and college marching bands which provided us with musical inspiration.
All in all it was a great commemoration of the great civil rights leader’s contribution to the progress of working people in this country.
